Combined fiberscopic ligation and sclerotherapy for internal hemorrhoids

Symptomatic internal hemorrhosids are common. Elastic band ligation or sclerotherapy is effective treatment for patients who fail conservative measures. We hypothesized that the combination of hemorrhoidal ligation and sclerother- apy, performed with a flexible fiberoptic endoscope, might be more effective than either treatment alone. The purpose of this report is to document our experience with this technique. Consecutive patients with symptomatic internal hemorrhoids were included In the study. Treatment was accomplished using a standard flexible endoscope Which was retroflexed in the rectum.
