US defence budgets face paring knife

Final deliberations are under way on the composition of the US Department of Defense's (DoD's) Fiscal Year 2007 budget and a number of crown jewels in the navy's modernisation plans are being considered for cuts because of their high price tags. Centre stage, the US Navy's (USN's) DD(X) next-generation destroyer and CVN-21 aircraft carrier programmes face potential trimming, delay or reprioritising, along with a raft of others.
