The emergence in the late 1960s/early 1970s of a new generation of anti-ship missile - both sea-skimming and fast high-diving - spurred the development of a number of shipborne point-defence missile systems designed to counter this increasingly stressing air threat.rnOne example was the UK's Seawolf system, the origins of which can be traced back to studies undertaken in the early 1960s under the project name 'Confessor'. This activity, sponsored by the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment, scoped the requirements for a new-generation ship self-defence missile to take on the new generation of anti-ship guided weapons by then already on the cards.
