The US Navy is seeking information from industry regarding an F/A-XX carrier-based strike fighter to potentially replace its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet tactical fighter and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft. Officials hope to see an initial operational capability for an F/A-XX aircraft in 2030 so they can begin replacing the Super Hornets once those airframes reach about 9,000 hours, Rear Admiral Donald Gaddis, programme executive officer for tactical aviation, said during a 16 April briefing at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space event in Maryland.
