A report in Bangladesh's New Age newspaper on 20 December 2013 announced the country's agreement with China to purchase two submarines for the Bangladesh Navy. While this report remains the sole source confirming the order, it follows repeated statements in recent years as to Bangladesh's intent to develop a submarine capability. In December 2013, IHS Jane's also reported that a senior Bangladeshi military official had confirmed that discussions with China over a submarine programme were under way.
