Rheinmetall Seeks Partners For Mout Multirole Weapon

International partners are being sought by Germany's Rheinmetall for the development of a new large-calibre multirole weapon (MRW) for MOUT (military operations in urban terrain) applications. For MOUT, the desired characteristics of the MRW would include high-angle of fire and wall-penetrating capabilities with a low risk of collateral damage, executable on the move and at low muzzle-gas pressures to minimise the blast overpressures affecting co-operating infantry in its immediate vicinity. High traverse and elevation rates would be required at all azimuths, with both fire and load-on-the-move capabilities at all elevations. The multifunctional MRW would be capable of both direct- and indirect-fire missions, based on a separated ammunition system able to fire both kinetic-energy (KE) and high-explosive (HE) munitions at appropriate velocities (in excess of 1,500 m/sec for KE rounds). Maximum elevation would be around 70 degrees and maximum depression around 10 degrees.
