In November 2010 Bombardier celebrated the delivery of the 1,000th example of its Dash 8 twin turboprop family, building on the pedigree of its forebear, de Havilland Canada. Latterly marketed by the company as the Q Series - reflecting the 'Quiet' characteristics afforded by a novel active noise and vibration suppression (NVS) system - its core market appeal has been to regional airlines demanding outstanding seat/mile costs, good short field performance, improved passenger comfort, eco-friendliness (through the combination of fuel efficiency, reduced noise and low nitrogen oxide emissions) and the benefits of common support and aircrew-type rating across the family. However, all of these attractions also pay dividends for military operators looking for special missions platforms.
