DRDO prepares Varunastra torpedo for trials

The Indian Navy will receive the new Varunastra electric-powered heavyweight torpedo for evaluation trials in mid-2014. The torpedo is being indigenously developed by the Visakhapat-nam-based Naval Science and Technology Laboratory (NSTL): a division of the Defence Research and Development Organisa- tion (DRDO). With a payload capacity of 250 kg, the 1,500 kg wire-guided torpedo is capable of achieving a maximum speed of 38 kt up to a range of 30 km.
