Putin regains Russian presidency but opposition disputes results

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev did not wait until Russia's Central Elections Commis sion (CEC) released the 4 March presidential vote's final outcome. Shortly after prelimi nary results gave Putin a 57% lead, Moscow's Manezh Square near the Kremlin was already filling with thousands of his supporters to hear his victory speech.
