US shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has acquired the autonomy business of US engineering firm Spatial Integrated Systems (SIS), expanding its capabilities in the growing market for unmanned surface vessels (USVs), HII announced on 4 January. HII said the acquisition will give it critical expertise in multivehicle collaborative autonomy, sensor fusion, and perception. It said SIS's unmanned technology has been fielded on 23 vessel types and is already used by the US Department of Defense to control and co-ordinate multiple unmanned vehicles jointly performing missions such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; harbour patrol; high-value unit escort; payload delivery; mine clearance; and supply transport.
