Ghani orders release of 400 Taliban prisoners

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has signed a decree ordering the release of the final 400 prisoners requested by the Taliban under the 29 February US-Taliban conditions-based agreement to enable the start of long-delayed intra-Afghan peace talks. Local media outlet TOLOnews reported that the president signed the order on 10 August, just one day after a Loya Jirga - a traditional grand assembly of Afghan elders - had passed a resolution recommending the measure, which is part of a prisoner exchange deal agreed between Washington and the Taliban.
