The US Department of Defense intends to revisit a promising aircraft concept called the oblique flying wing (OFW) that has yet to appear operationally due to engineering challenges inherent to the design. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced on 19 August that it is launching a programme, called Switchblade, to develop a supersonic OFW aircraft and fly a demonstrator version, or X-plane, around 2010.
