Suicide bombers take heavy toll in Algeria

Algeria suffered its bloodiest week in months after three suicide bombings targeting military and police outposts killed 54 people, most of them civilians, and left dozens more wounded. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombings in populated zones east of the capital Algiers but they mark a shift in tactics that has evoked concerns of foreign involvement by militants trained outside of Algeria allied with Al-Qaeda. A suicide bomber drove his car on 19 August into a crowd outside the prestigious military police academy in Issers, just 55 km east of Algiers, killing 43 and leaving scores wounded and buildings damaged. All but one of the victims were civilians, most of them young people looking to enterthe academy and join the country's military: one of the largest and best-resourced in Africa.
