Large Opv Enters Service With India

The Indian Coast Guard commissioned a large offshore patrol vessel (OPV), ICGS Samrat, on 21 January. The 105 m, 2,250-ton vessel, built by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), is the second such vessel to join the coast guard's fleet. The lead ship, ICGS Sankalp, was commissioned in May 2008. Launched on 2 July 2007, Sam-rat was built within 42 months to a fixed price with no cost overruns, according to GSL's chairman and managing director, Rear Admiral A K Handa. Samrat and Sankalp are the largest and most advanced vessels in the Indian Coast Guard. Equipped with an integrated platform management system and integrated bridge system from Raytheon Marine/Noris Automation, the OPVs are armed with two 30 mm CRN-91 gun mounts and two 12.7 mm Prahari heavy machine guns. They are capable of carrying a Sea King-sized helicopter.
