The US Navy (USN) is to arm its Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with air-to-surface rockets to enable commanders to Independently Identify and engage hostile targets without the need for additional air support, the company announced on 8 November.The outfitting of the unmanned helicopters with the BAE Systems Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) has already begun under a USD17 million contract awarded to the company on 23 September, Northrop Grumman said. Delivery of an operational system is expected by March 2013.
