With more than 60 per cent of Peru's territory located in the Amazon region, transportation is limited to rivers and access to local communities is sporadic. "It is a considerable challenge to provide maritime security in the Amazon region and effectively control this zone," Rear Admiral Wladimiro Gio-vannini told Jane's. "Therefore we make full use of our assets such as ships and helicopters and we maintain close co-operation with the coastguard and the forces of neighbouring states.
