Denmark, Greenland plan Arctic force

Denmark and Greenland are finalising plans to establish a new Arctic Military Command. The ambitionsare detailed in a draft 10-year Joint Arctic Strategy, which was revealed in late May. It embeds plans for a stronger Arctic military focus, merging formerly separate commands in Greenland and the Faroe Islands and establishing a new joint command centre in Nuuk: Capital of the largely autonomous Greenland. The command centre will supplement five existing regional detachments in Greenland and at Torshavn in the Faroes. The move follows the 19 Pay unveiling of Russia's first Arctic special forces' brigade, based at Peehenga on the Kola Peninsular. Its inauguration, was described by the Russian authorities as "balancing the situation" with NATO in the Arctic region.
