China to build military base in Djibouti

Djibouti will host China's first foreign military base, it was confirmed on 4 December, when Djiboutian foreign minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf told AFP that "the negotiations have come to an end and the naval base will be built". He said China would use the base to support the counter-piracy operations it has been carrying out in the region for several years and protect Chinese shipping more generally. Djibouti is already the home of Japan's only foreign military base and the Unites States' only acknowledged base in Africa, as well as a long-standing French military presence.
