To the consumer, the petroleum and natural gas industry is the supplier or retailer of petrol and heating fuels used by that person. This is the industry interface with the consumer but that interface contains a very extensive, interdependent network of contributors backing that retailer. The trade name on a petrol station is the company which supplies the fuel, refines it, produces it, drills for it, and explores for it. In the petroleum industry, these companies are known as operators, and are usually, but not always, responsible for the total supply chain. Their owners, or in other words, stockholders, expect these companies to operate in a responsible manner to generate a profit for them.
