In this paper we present our studies using Pauling electrostatic bond strength (ESB) rules for structural behaviour, cation vacancies, relation between x, y, and the valence of cations and coordination in spinel compounds Li_xMn_2O_4, 0 < x < 1 and Li_(1+y)Mn_(2-y)O_4, 0 < y < 1/3, which are of interest as the positive electrodes for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
