Gordon - Hydroelectric power station on the Gordon River in southwest Tasmania. Its powerhouse is located underground with water supplied from Lake Gordon through a vertical shaft and returned to the Gordon through a 1.6km tailrace tunnel. Commissioned in 1977 with two machines (and a third commissioned in 1988), it has an operating head of 192m and a total of 450MW installed capacity. Gordon is a storage station; the first two machines provide base load generation while the third machine provides peak generation. The storage dam is a spectacular double curvature concrete arch with a height of 140m and crest length of 198m.
