Trade barriers are one of the main impediments to the revitalisation of overland transport on the ancient silk road. For it is not the road conditions, but rather cross-border traffic regulations that create the biggest headaches for transport companies in the Arab world. This was the conclusion arrived at by an IRU study presented by the Dutch transport policy consultancy Panteia recently.
