Sugarcane yield components and sugar content in ROC22 progeny populations

The objectives of this study were to find the effect of ROC22 as a parent on cane yield and sugar content in progeny populations (PPs) by crossing ROC22 as a female or male, and to evaluate its PPs for selection. ROC22 was crossed with 18 other sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) parental varieties or clones and 21 PPs were produced by 6 crosses with ROC22 as a female and 15 as a male. Seven traits were collected from a family trial containing ROC22 as control cultivar: millable stalks per stool (MS), plant height (PH), stalk diameter (SD), sugar content (SC), single stalk weight (SSW), tons of cane per hectare (TCH) and tons of sugar per hectare (TSH) in the PPs. Comparisons were made between ROC22 and its PPs and the percentage of seedlings (PS) with better cane yield components (MS, PH and SD) than ROC22 was determined, and each PP was compared with the grand mean of 21 PPs for all the 7 traits. In addition, a breeding rate (BR) was calculated by multiplying PS for MS, PH and SD, and was used for evaluating the possibility for selection. The results indicated that PPs derived from ROC22 as a male produced significantly higher SC, SD, TCH and TSH than PPs devived from ROC22 as a female. This suggests that crossing ROC22 as a male would be more efficient for high cane yield and high SC than crossing as a female. Five families ROC22 x Yunrui05-171, CP94-1100 x ROC22, Guitang92-66 x ROC22, Yuetang89-240 x ROC22, Yuetang91-976 x ROC22 were recommended for both higher BR and SC than the grand mean of 21 PPs.
