This editorial frequently discusses the difficulty of providing faster, simpler, wider access to electronic data, whilst at the same time keeping that data secure from unauthorised use. An area that would really benefit from rapid dissemination of documents - both textual and graphic - is healthcare. Hospitals are frequently large institutions, and the top physicians have huge demands on their limited time. Walking from one side of a large hospital to the other simply to express an opinion for another physician to act upon is not the best use of expert hours. How much better if the expert could examine medical documentation and advise remotely - when appropriate - and how much more efficient when it comes to transferring records from physician to physician, or over to back office functions such as billing.
