GE has been awarded a contract by the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) to provide upgrade services for the 1602 MW Mingtan pumped-storage plant, which will help to extend the plant's operational life by 20 years and reduce maintenance work, as well as enhance efficiency. Under the contract, announced on 22 November, GE's Power Conversion business will upgrade the two sets of startup frequency converter (SFC) control systems, which is intended to improve harmonic levels at the plant. In addition, GE will also provide uninterruptible power supply systems and conduct factory acceptance tests as well as on-site tests. GE's solution will also allow the generator startup to be energized by both thermal and hydropower, it said. Taiwan's largest hydropower plant will continue to operate throughout the upgrade.
