Hidroelectrica completes refurbishment of the first unit at Calimanesti, Romania

Romania's state hydropower producer Hidroelectrica announced on 21 December the commissioning of unit 1 of the 39.6 MW Calimanesti hydropower plant in the southern county of Valcea, after extensive refurbishment works. The inauguration of the unit was attended by the Minister of Energy, Anton Anton, the company's management and representatives of the contractors. The upgrades, which cost RON 23.98 million (US$ 5.89 million), were carried out by SSH Hidroserv and UCM Resita as subcontractor. The refurbishment work, which have increased the reliability of the unit and extended its lifecycle, will also allow for remote control of the equipment. Calimanesti, which is part of the Olt River hydropower scheme, is equipped with two 19.8 MW Kaplan turbine-generating units which produce average annual output of 106 GWh.
