Garson seizes on the central question. How could such a cultured nation as Germany develop mass murder to such proportions? Garson's answer is 'the persistence of imagery' (p. 165), but this turns the question back to the reader. How could such a cultured, scientific, information-rich, modern nation as X not understand that its economic path was leading it to ecological catastrophe? How can other societies not be changed into parodies of democracy? Although the USA is full of persistent images of wrongdoing, homicide and self-contented people, Hollywood has not overwhelmed the Churches or the political system. The National Rifle Association has critics. There are strong individual voices and movements - e.g., Rachel Carson, Ralph Nader, Barry Commoner, Noam Chomsky and Paul Ehrlich - that challenge various destructive trends. Yet, America has indebted itself to a level almost incomprehensible as a number, let alone the political consequences. Did this happen through a lack of information, or by the successful abuse of the political system?
