Charles Correa (1930-2015)

Charles Correa passed away on 16th June, in Mumbai where he lived and worked. Some have called him India's greatest architect, whatever that means. He won several important professional awards in his lifetime, including the RIBA Gold Medal (1984), the UIA's Robert Matthew Prize (1984) and the UIA Gold Medal (1990), AIA's Chicago Architecture Award (1986) and the IIA Gold Medal. He was awarded India's second highest public award the Padma Vibhushan (2006), ironically, in the category science and engineering. He is the only architect to receive this award. In India, architecture is generally understood as an extension of engineering. Japan awarded Correa the Praemium Imperiale for Architecture (1994).
