Iconic Priming: Just an Old Experimental Psychology Technique or a Potential New Tool to Systematically “Do” Multicultural Counseling?

Iconic priming, a decades old psychology construct, influences individual thought and behavior significantly and systematically in the direction of the icon's host culture by using well-recognized, psychosocial prompts to shift our minds between and within our corresponding cultural blueprints of the same (Hong, Morris, Chiu, & Benet-Martinez, 2000). Conceptually, iconic priming can operate as a form of guided imagery by concretely getting at the schemata and scripts underlying our multiple cultural selves in much the same way we help discover a client's safe place or assist them in plumbing their memory for important events, symbols, and/or images to make sense of the problem (Arbuthnott, Arbuthnott, & Rossiter, 2001; Hong et al., 2000). Practical, theoretical, and research adaptations of iconic priming may well bolster our multicultural counselling repertoire of empathic, constructivistic, and relevant human technology ideas and skills (Baumgarten & Roffers, 2003). A call for further consideration is given.
