Software in GAS DETECTORS

Most modern gas detectors today have software built into them and frequently support software for the user. Software control of modern instruments gives flexibility in the design and operation of the instrument which is generally not possible with hardware only solutions, In addition, many istruments interface with PC's which use standard operating systems and any interface system used for gas detectors has to be compatible with these systems. In addition, many instruments interface with PC's which use standard operating systems and any interface system used for gas detectors has to be compatible with these systems, Computer hardware and software are changing at a rate which is several orders of magnitude faster than most gas detection design cycles so there is a continual element of change in external systems that provides a challenge to industrial gas detetion manufacturers to maintain compatibility. There will be increased demand on manufacturers to provide software based solutions to customers in a competitive environment and the production and control of software for instruments is a continuing challenge for manufacturers. The need for a structured approach to software development and control is essential to ensure the reliable, cost effective and safe operation of gas detection equipment.This article looks at some of the issues associated with the specifying, design validation and verification of software as used in gas detection equipment.
