European Union environment ministers agreed July 4 to set up a special committee of experts in order to find ways to alter the European Union's regulatory regime so that member states can, among other things, adopt genetically modified organism-free zones as well as challenge scientific decisions taken by the European Food Safety Authority. The new committee of experts will meet over the next several months and issue a report to EU member state environment ministers when they meet in October, According to French environment officials, who hosted an informal meeting of EU environment ministers on the outskirts of Paris July 3-4, EU ministers will decide in December what measures are needed in order to incorporate the changes more than half of EU member states said they support.
