According to the report, anaerobic digestion could help the United Kingdom meet several targets including reducing carbon dioxide emissions by at least 26 percent by 2020 and increasing its share of energy from renewable sources from around 1.5 percent in 2006 to 15 percent by 2020. The technology also could help the United Kingdom achieve the EU Landfill Directive's requirement to reduce the amount of biodegradable municipal waster sent to landfills to 35 percent of 1995 levels by 2020. In anaerobic digestion, bacteria operate in the absence of oxygen to break down biodegradable material like food waste, livestock slurries, sewage sludge, and energy crops, and produce a gas that can be used in a furnace, gas engine, turbine, or gas-powered vehicle. The report said anaerobic digestion can be carried out on a small scale-for instance, on a farm-or in large, centralized systems that use food waste from local governments' landfills or manure from several farms.
