Germany and China have agreed to work together to help fight climate change, Germany's Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety said Jan. 29. In a Memorandum of Understanding signed by German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel and Zhang Ping, the head of China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the two nations agreed to close cooperation on issues of climate change, energy, and research and technology. Germany and China also agreed to establish a high-profile working group managed by the German Environment Ministry and the NDRC. "I'm very pleased that we succeeded in arranging a close cooperation on climate change with China in the run-up to the climate conference in Copenhagen," Gabriel said in a press statement, referring to the U.N. climate change meeting that will take place in December. "Challenging climate protection measures hold enormous economic advantages," because rerouting early enough toward economic processes that produce less carbon dioxide emissions can be profitable, Gabriel added.
