摘要

The Global Environment Facility, in collaboration with two U.N. agencies, has embarked on a project to promote efficient energy use in buildings in five East African countries in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project was announced May 18 by Monique Bar-but, GEF's chief executive officer and chairwoman. The project will be implemented in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda at a cost of $2.85 million over the next four years. The United Nations Environment Program and the U.N. Human Settlements Program are other partners in the effort. "Currently in East Africa there are no legal binding standards that exist towards construction of buildings that conserve energy," UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner told BNA in a May 24 telephone interview.
