Demand for Environmental Liability Insurance More Than Doubles in Brazil After Oil Spill

The value of environmental liability insurance policies sold in Brazil in the first two months of 2012 was more than twice the value of those sold in a comparable period in 2011, the director of the National Federation of Insurance Companies (Fenseg) told BNA April 25. Fenseg Director Neival Freitas said the rise in value— mainly from a greater number of policies sold—may have been spurred in part by lawsuits and fines faced by Chevron and drilling rig operator Transocean after 3,000 barrels of oil seeped from seabed fissures near an appraisal well off southeastern Brazil in November (35 INER 401, 4/25/12).
