European Union to Aim for 'Understanding' On Bloc's 2030 Climate Goals by Mid-2014

The European Union should have a "political understanding" on what its climate and energy targets for 2030 should be prior to a U.N. Climate Change Leaders' Summit that will take place in New York in fall 2014, the bloc's top climate official said July 17. EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said that in the context of international negotiations on climate change, which are planned to lead to a global deal in 2015, the European Union should "get ready with its 2030 targets, so that we know when we are in these negotiations on our way to 2015 what is it that Europe will be ready to deliver."
