Environment Canada Concludes That 42 Benzidine-Based Dyes Not Toxic Substances

Environment Canada published a final decision that 42 benzidine-based dyes do not meet toxicity criteria under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. A screening assessment found that while the dyes pose a risk to human health due to potential carcinoge-nicity, the low risk of harm they pose to organisms or the environment means they do not currently meet toxicity criteria under Section 64 of the Act, Environment Canada said in a notice in the Nov. 29 issue of the Canada Gazette, Part Ⅰ. The assessment was published in draft form in June 2013. The substances-24 benzidine-based direct dyes, nine benzidine-based acid dyes, five benzidine derivatives, two benzidine-based cationic indicators and two benzidine-based precursors-were identified as priorities for assessment in the aromatic azo and benzidine-based substances grouping, part of the Canadian government's broader Chemicals Management Plan initiative.
