Synthetic Biology Risks Should Be Assessed, Managed With Precaution, Treaty Parties Say

Governments around the globe have agreed that organisms and other material derived through synthetic biology should be researched and developed with precaution, using risk management strategies that ensure one country's activities do not harm the environment of another. The 194 countries that have ratified the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity concluded their 12th Conference of the Parties (COP) Oct. 17. The United States signed the convention in 1993, but has not ratified it.
