Manitoba Provides $1 Million for Research In Support of Biomass Energy Industry

The Manitoba government has doubled funding for its Biomass Energy Support Program to $1 million (US$911,000), with an additional $500,000 in new funding targeted to applied research projects that will support the growth of the industry. The program provides support for the transition from burning coal to processing and using biomass for heating. Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn said in an Aug. 22 news release that the new funding would be directed to research projects addressing gaps or identifying opportunities for business and technology development in the biomass sector. Successful applicants may be eligible for cost-shared supports of up $50,000 each, to a maximum of 50 percent of total eligible costs, and must demonstrate that the capital upgrade is necessary and directly related to the processing, handling, storage or burning of biomass fuel.
