European Union Nanomaterial Definition Could Be Clarified, Scientific Advisers Say

Guidance should be issued to clarify certain aspects of the European Union's regulatory definition of a nanomaterial, according to the European Commission's in-house science service, the Joint Research Center (JRC). The commission, the EU's executive arm, published the definition in 2011 to help lawmakers distinguish between nanomaterials and the same substances at standard scale in the implementation of laws such as the REACH regulation (Regulation No. 1907/2006 on the registration, evaluation and authorization of chemicals) (34 INER 1000, 10/26/11).
