Legal Framework, Reaching New Goals, Key For China to Peak Carbon Emissions by 2030

China took a major step in solidifying its previously stated goal to reach a peak in carbon emissions "around 2030," including that wording in its national pledge to the United Nations ahead of the end-of-year climate change talks. But reaching that goal by 2030, or perhaps even sooner, will require a much greater use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, major investments in energy efficiency and emissions reduction, seriously capping coal consumption and introducing a functioning carbon emissions trading system sooner rather than later, said analysts following the country's carbon policies.
