Canada Broadens Environmental Safety Regulation Oversight of Companies' Pipelines

Canada has increased its regulatory oversight of pipeline companies to better protect the environment. The new regulations clarify requirements for companies such as TransCanada Pipelines Ltd., Trans Mountain Pipeline ULC, Enbridge Inc., Kinder Morgan Cochin ULC and Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. to initiate damage prevention programs and to issue administrative fines for companies that fail to comply. The four sets of amended regulations under the Pipeline Safety Act update existing requirements to clarify the responsibilities of pipeline companies, landowners, land users and the public to safely carry out construction and other activities near a pipeline, the National Energy Board said June 29.
