Cruise liners, cargo ships and ferries plan to slow down for a two-month trial off Washington state and British Columbia to see if slower speeds and less underwater noise would help protect endangered killer whales. Fifty-three marine shipping industry organizations and the Washington State Ferries agreed to participate in the voluntary two-month study in Haro Strait, between Vancouver Island and San Juan Island, an important summer feeding area for the southern resident killer whale population.
