Mosque challenge

A new 20000 m~2 Islamic Cultural Centre is under construction in Cologne, Germany. The complex project includes two 55 m high minarets and a 34.5 m high dome, and when complete it will be able to accommodate 1200 people for prayers. Dusseldorf, Germany-based lead contractor Nuha Bauunternehmung involved formwork suppler Doka from an early stage. A key challenge was supporting the dome during construction, as it comprises five individual shells that remain separate until they meet at a height of 21 m. The shells also open outward up to a height of 12 m, and it is only at the top of the structure that they meet in a single steel ring beam.
