Monitoring complex surround signals

In the autumn of 1996, Danish metering manufacturer DK-Audio launched the first in what was to become a series of new products. Billed as the MSD600, the new meter unveiled at that year's AES exhibition in Europe was the first to deliberately target the growing surround sound fraternity. Featuring a distinctive new display, DK-Audio's MSD 600 was revolutionary because it made it possible for audio engineers to see exactly what was going on with the signal, even when they were working in surround sound, which in those days was primarily Dolby Pro Logic, with only four channels of audio. Metering has always been a critical element in any audio recording system but the industry's growing interest in 5.1,6.1 and 7.1 surround sound has placed even greater six or more channels and their interaction. And as with stereo signals, the phase relationship between the channels are of prime importance. Our answer to this is the Master Stereo Display 600 series - a range of products that are specifically designed for multi-channel use with special emphasis on surround sound applications. Indeed it hasn't taken long for the MSD600's characteristic Jelly-Fish-F display to become a familiar sight in many audio suites.
