Method and system for processing sound signals for a surround left channel and a surround right channel

In automotive and home surround sound systems, left and right surround signals may be supplied by the program source (5.1 format), they may be derived from a single surround channel, or they may be derived from stereo or mono program material. The signal processing described in this patent is intended to enhance both discrete and derived surround reproduction. Some embodiments include frequency filtering but the basic feature of the invention is a “continually varying” delay between surround left and right signals, which are processed independently. This is said to provide decorrelation as well as “enhanced” surround sound perception. The delay may change gradually over a period of several seconds or it may be pseudorandom in nature.—GLA
