摘要

River flow (discharge) regimes demonstrate variability over a range of temporal and spatial scales (Poff 2002). This hydrological dynamic is highly important in determining the structure and functioning of aquatic and riparian ecosystems (Naiman et al. 2002). Recent research has begun to identify the ecologically significant facets of the discharge regime (Poff et al. 1997, Richter et al. 1996). A large number of flow indices have been identified for potential use in understanding and predicting river ecology. These indices characterise: seasonal variations in flow; timing, frequency, and duration of extremes; rates of flow change; and magnitude of flows (Lake 2003, Olden & Poff 2003).
