Roberto Lazzeroni believes that a sense of place is essential to the success of most design. 'I hate the way that hotels and boutiques are starting to look the same all over the world,' says the 50-year-old designer, who is currently working on a hotel in Lecce, Puglia, but is best known as a furniture designer for Ceccotti Collezioni, Moroso and IPE Cavalli. 'A project must be tied to the place in which it is located. Failure to do this is to exalt the architect's ego above the design.' No one could accuse Lazzeroni of falling into the egotist's trap. Born and bred in the village of Cascina, near Pisa, Tuscany, the designer has stayed loyal to his Tuscan heritage. While the majority of Italian designers gravitate to Milan, Lazzeroni has never strayed far from his first home.
