A laser-Doppler velocimeter with microscopic probe volume has been developed in order to measure concentration distributions of particles in flowing suspensions containing, e.g., blood cells or microspheres. Experiments on flow through simple geometries were performed to demonstrate the applicability of the apparatus. Velocity profiles could be measured with an inaccuracy of about 2% and a spatial resolution of 15 /spl mu/m, whereas concentration measurements yielded typical inaccuracies of 7%. The determination of absolute particle concentrations without additional calibration was demonstrated to be feasible too.
