摘要

A bipartisan panel of current and former government officials, including Pentagon acquisition chief Ellen Lord and Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), spoke Thursday about threats to the U.S. defense industrial base, specifically addressing the tension between on-shoring to protect supply chains and competing with China around the globe. The virtual panel discussion, hosted by the Hudson Institute, follows the Defense Department's release of its congressionally mandated assessment of the defense industrial base. Panelist Bob Work, former deputy defense secretary, said he has become increasingly concerned about efforts to onshore and domestically source the defense supply chain because, while it might protect single points of failure, it does little to strengthen U.S. allies and cedes the global marketplace to China. It also could leave the United States without access to the best products.
